'Drop D' Guitar Workshops
Richard Chaff has been playing guitar for 50 years. Scary, eh?
Richard has lived all over the UK, including over a decade in the Shetland Islands, renowned for the excellent style and complexity of its folk music. He's a multi-instrumentalist who has written many songs and tunes over the years, but has always focused on and excelled at playing guitar alongside folk tune musicians.
Playing with a near-standard tuning, only the low E is dropped a tone to D. This tuning is commonly referred to as 'Drop D tuning'. In his workshops, Richard explores the rich possibilities that are opened up by this seemingly small change. The importance of a good quality capo that can be moved easily will also become clear!
Accompanied by one or more tune players from midswégan, Richard will cover the basics of the tuning (such as chords, notes, etc.) before revealing the importance of bass notes and progressions, rhythm (both on- and off-beat, whether played or inferred) and alternative chords. Using tunes from our Folk Tune Workshops, this Drop D Guitar workshop builds skills and confidence for guitarists who are finding their way with tune (and song) backing, and opens up possibilities for spontaneous playing with strangers who may have attended our Folk Tune Workshops!
